What Questions Should I Ask a Criminal Lawyer?

All attorneys are not the same, and there are questions you should ask a criminal lawyer before you hire them to make sure they’re a good fit for you and your situation.

Facing criminal charges is stressful. You need to feel comfortable with the criminal lawyer who will be defending you and confident in their ability to get you the best outcome possible.

You’ll have many things running through your mind … questions that you want to ask … answers you need to know. It’s best to put your questions in writing on a piece of paper so that you don’t forget any of them.

10 Important Questions to Ask a Criminal Lawyer

Here are 10 important questions that should be on your list:

  1. How long have you been a criminal defense lawyer?
  2. Do you have experience with the criminal charges I’m facing?
  3. Do you have experience with the court that’s handling/hearing my case?
  4. Do you hold any special certifications or qualifications that relate to the crimes I’m charged with?
  5. How big is your firm?
  6. Will I be working directly with you?
  7. Does my case have to go to trial?
  8. How much is working with you going to cost me?
  9. How often will I communicate with you?
  10. Why should I choose you to represent me?

You probably have other questions specific to your situation. Write them down, too. Add them to the list.

Ask them.

And be sure you get the answers you need to make an informed and confident decision about moving forward with the criminal lawyer you’re considering … or not.

Don’t Settle

Your choice of attorney is a big decision. In a lot of ways, you’re putting your future into their hands.

This is not a time to settle for “good enough.”

Ask your questions. And if the answers cause you to hesitate, consider why that is.

It really is better in the long run for all involved when you find a criminal lawyer that you can be comfortable with. Someone you can trust.
